Summary |
"Reaching Beyond the Waves tells the story of how one teacher's elementary school students located survivors and rescuers of a World War II event involving Eddie Rickenbacker and the crew of his B-17 that ditched into the Pacific. Seven of the men then survived on rafts for three weeks.Forty-two years after the men's ordeal, one class wanted to know what had happened to the men. Students' interest, first piqued by a book which the author annually read to her classes, started research that ultimately led to a reunion of survivors with some of their rescuers, who had not seen them since lifting the men from rafts. At their school, this reuniting of the men became known as the "Rescue Reunion," and the students were hailed as the "Sixth Grade Super Sleuths."From personal association with the men involved, declassified military reports, and photographs, Suzanne Kelly shares how she and her students located people and information, and the multitude of discoveries they made through their investigations. It is a story of facts and friendships--of reaching out and building relationships around the world.". |
