Summary |
1141. England is engulfed in war as King Stephen and his cousin, the Empress Matilda, vie for the crown. In this dangerous world, a depraved monk obsessed with redheads kidnaps Emma, an eleven-year old peasant, and leaves her for dead. When Gwil, an archer for hire, finds her, Emma has no memory of her previous life. Gwil dresses her as a boy, names her Penda, and teaches her to use a bow. Together they make their way to the small but strategic castle of fifteen-year old Maud, who has tempted fate by giving shelter to the empress. But there is one man who hasn't forgotten the little red-haired girl. He has some unfinished business with her and he is determined to finish it. And one freezing winter in a castle completely besieged, he might well get his chance. |
