Summary In the Dzanga Dzanga National Park in the Congo Basin, Italian zoologist Chloe Cipoletta studies the habituation process among a group of Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). In order to protect the gorillas, Cipoletta hopes to establish a successful tourist industry, attracting attention and governmental money to the park. Over the course of her research, Cipoletta begins the human habituation process, gradually becoming closer to the gorillas until they accept regular human contact. Cipoletta carefully examines their feeding habits, parenting behavior, seed dispersal techniques, and social behavior, play, and socially negative behavior. The habituation process has its drawbacks, however -- because the gorillas trust humans, they are more vulnerable to poachers. The mourning and grieving process among this group of gorillas is also observed, as a juvenile dies when falling from a tree. Ultimately, protection for the gorillas may lie in positive interactions with native Congolese communities, advanced research, and a burgeoning tourist industry.
